In an article 15 Ideas to Increase Camping Web Site Usability, Kimberly Krause Berg writes on how to set up a good website for your camping. Her angle is originally from search engine optimization but she also writes as an experienced user of camping website who has a number of general suggestions for improving those websites (and maybe the campsite as well). A subject quite related to offering wireless Internet access. More and more visitors will use the campings' website to get an idea of the campsite in advance.

GPS unit with integrated wifi (for map updates) by Koos van den Hout in In the news

New good reasons to find campsites with wireless Internet access: the latest in GPS unit has built-in wifi to access the Internet for map updates.

The Pharos GPS 525 uses wifi to access the Pharos map server for updates. Great integration in one device. It's based on a PocketPC, so other software for the pocketpc platform will also work, like software voip (telephone over the Internet).

Sounds like a great device if you are looking for a navigation system. The constantly updated maps (even on the road, given wifi Internet access) may be an advantage over other navigation systems.

Piggybacking Neighbors' Networks by Koos van den Hout in In the news

In an article in Wifi Net News, Piggybacking Neighbors' Networks, Glenn Fleishman links to an article in the New York Times about people using other peoples' open wireless networks. In the article, people are interviewed who finally find out that the slowness of their Internet link is due to the neighbours using it, and fix this by securing the network.

Only partly related to Camp Wireless, but I think some people reading here have tried to use the wireless access-point found on a campsite once or twice (yes, I have done exactly that, I admit).

My opinion still holds that manufacturers of wireless access-points should make 'secure' the default option for their equipment. If you want to open your network to the world, do so, but do it as a conscious choice, not as a side-effect from plugging in the access-pointing and seeing it work the first time.

Developments in camping in the US by Koos van den Hout in In the news

Modern camping, with luxury RVs and all the amenities isn't 'roughing it' according to opinions in an article in the Orlando Sentinel.

Recently, company officials at Kampgrounds of America polled campers about amenities they'd like to see. High on the list were cable and phone lines and wireless Internet access.

But don't blame the kids for the shift to high-tech camping.

"We can't say, 'Those darned Gen-Xers are killing camping,' " says Jef Sutherland of KOA. "That's not true. It's grandma and grandpa pulling in their RV and pulling out their laptops, saying, 'Where's the connection? I need to send an e-mail to the grandkids.' "

Another article in the Kansas City Star: Parks connect with comfort-seekers about the new wish for amenities (such as wireless Internet) at campsites and people camping in big RVs with all the luxuries of home such as (multiple) televisions, dvd players, satellite dishes and even washing machines.

Kampgrounds of America, which oversees 450 private campgrounds nationwide, now has electricity at 80 percent of it sites. What’s more, half the campgrounds now have wireless Internet access, says Mike Gast, communications director of KOA.

Crandall says that technology, such as laptop computers to access e-mail and the Internet, should be welcomed, rather than shunned as inconsistent with the camping experience.

Great article about using wireless Internet in RV parks by Koos van den Hout in Tips and tricks

Bob Welch, columnist for the The Register-Guard writes about the new offerings of wireless Internet access in state park campgrounds. He makes the valid point that a state park campground is to get away from home, not to bring the home and the office.

the state Parks and Recreation Department plans to sign a contract with the Oregon Travel Information Network this week to install wireless Internet systems in two campgrounds: Valley of the Rogue State Park near Grants Pass and Harris Beach State Park near Brookings.

The systems, like others installed in more than 25 states, should be in place by midsummer.

And though they are only pilot programs, they may be the precursors of more techno-campgrounds in the future.

Frankly, this makes me feel:

:(

Why? Because how are people going to get away from it all if we keep making it so easy to bring "it" all with them?

Allthough the current season (in the Northern hemisphere) does not invite thoughts about camping and outdoor activities, summer will come and in a few months we will be thinking of what to do in the summer.

Interesting news in wireless Internet access on campsites is that TengoInternet will be offering wireless Internet access on campsites in Texas state parks.

According to Tengo:

TengoInternet and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department today announced a pilot program to offer wireless Internet service at five Texas state parks – Choke Canyon State Park (Calliham) near Three Rivers, Blanco State Park near Blanco, Balmorhea State Park near Toyahvale, Goose Island State Park near Rockport, and Ray Roberts Lake State Park (Isle du Bois) near Pilot Point.

With the growth of campsites offering wireless Internet access and the interest in the subject, my prediction is that wireless Internet access on campsites will be one of the big subjects of 2005. Wireless networking in the home was big in 2003-2004, the campsite is set for 2005.

The Albany Union Times writes about wireless Internet access becoming an amenitie that visitors want at RV sites.

Albany Union Times article

From the article:

For a growing segment of vacationers, roughing it is as tame as a nap on the porch. And camper requests for phone jacks, cable links and Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity) Internet connections are driving campgrounds throughout the Adirondacks to plug in.

Do you want to write about your experiences with wireless Internet access on campsites? Why you would not want to go 'on the road' without your laptop and wireless card?

I'd like to have more articles for the site about how people use this. If you want to share something, write me at webmaster@camp-wireless.org.
